James Mellor has left this life way too fucking young. It isn't fair but life never is so I will simply think of his loveliness and all the great conversations we've shared and be content that I was lucky enough to have known this man.

I was saddened to read this post all the way from Germany. I didn't know James IRL but he always seemed like a really sweet guy, full of enthusiasm and positivity.
Natalie, it's nice that he has RL friends like to you ensure he is remembered online.

He was sick for quite some time, the poor guy. I messaged him and wrote to him about how he'd like to be remembered on OzFreaks but in the end I suspect he was too weak to reply. I hope he knows we're thinking about him though. Of course he does. I'm glad Natalie created this thread. He more than deserves it. I hope all the old gang comes back to post on it. I'm pretty sure that would make him happy. ~Ferrero PS - I'm glad (but still faintly amused) that, unlike the classic 'bad news about sslop thread' (not the actual title, but it's been many years) no one took this to be a hoax. Of course we have better taste than that. PPS - Cabs, what are you doing in Deutschland? Business or pleasure?

He was so great - Look how loved he was by so many: vimeo.com/channels/weloveyoujamesI recommend watching some of the videos above. His friends had a film screening just for him.

I've bumped up threads he started or threads about him. I hope you all get a chance to read them and remember how witty James is and what a great contributor he was.
This is all too horrible. I wish it wasn't true.

I reread a good part of the "Joanna Newsom / JCriquet Australian Tour 2005" thread. Reading James's cute little summary of the day just brought it all back.
A sweet, funny, great guy.

I knew James was battling illness, but I haven't been in contact with him for a while and this is a shock. I will be back to post a longer tribute to our friend soon, but no words will ever be able to capture how innately good a person he was. He stayed with me several times over the years as he crisscrossed Australia, and I was lucky enough to visit him once in Adelaide. James was a good bowler, and a good man. He was one of us. He was a man who loved the outdoors, and bowling, and as a surfer he explored the beaches of South Australia from Kangaroo Island to the Limestone Coast, and up to Maslin. He died as so many young men of his generation, before his time... Goodnight sweet prince. The first picture I could find on my computer, attached. Attachments:

Ha - I remember that image! I didn't know he was a surfer too. The Joanna Newson tour was awesome-town. Those were the days... ~Ferrero

I did not know he was a surfer either.
Sweet is a great way to describe him Jade.
You are lucky to have had those moments with him Splash. He was such a loving, good natured guy.
He actually wanted me to invite you to my wedding. At the time I thought it was a strange request seeing I have not met you Splash but I know now he wanted as many of us in one place as possible. He would have loved to see you again.
I am not taking his death well. I feel so angry that this happened. He didn't get to live to 30 which is a travesty.

This is all too horrible. I wish it wasn't true. I agree wholeheartedly. I never got to know him as well as most of you guys did but I really wish I did. I always had this feeling that he and I would get along greatly. He truly was one of my favourites from this board. I loved reading his posts/replies and we would often send each other private messages. He always got my references and we would joke about them later. I sent him some F&G related stuff and he sent me a disc filled with all kinds of awesome goodies. He knew what I liked...another reason why I adored him. I will miss him.

I want to nip the surfing thing in the bud:
Trust me, James would have got it, and he would have loved it.
The first night he stayed at my place we got a sixpack of Little Creatures Pale Ale and watched The Big Lebowski together - a common fave of ours.
My apologies for any confusion, it was meant as a loving tribute, and the sentiment is true. He was one of us.
Natalie you are married! I am slow, I know. I don't facebook or twitter and I check my email sometimes only every fortnight, and even then I'm bad at replying. I can't remember if I've even given you my congratulations. I could be a better friend.
It's great to see everyone post for James. That first time he came to Brisbane I remember him showing me his script based on an anecdote from a thread on this very board about the story of a guy who dies, and he leaves instructions for a friend to go into his room and delete all the secret porn off his computer, and for some reason that is sticking in my mind at this time. I wonder if his life imitated his art, and that makes me smile. All my memories of James make me smile. I'm not sure I want to know how bad it was for him at the end, and I feel for those of you who had more contact with him towards the end. It's ok if you're not taking it well. We're here for James and we're also here for each other. If anyone needs to talk about anything off the board please feel free to PM or email me, and I promise I'll reply. And if anyone has details about what's happening with the funeral or any arrangements please let me know.
Love you all,
-Splash
