i was watching Adaptation the other day and I know that Splash and nat will defend this movie to their deaths but i think i figured out why i didnt like it as much as they did. its because i find the first half of the movie much more entertaining than the second half. like the Robert McKee character sees "wow them in the end and you have a hit."
the thing with this movie is that you are wowed at the beginning of the film. I think if you did some clever editing whereby you put the "end" of the movie at the beginning and show the events leading up to it somehow you might find a way around it.
its still a good film though.
has anyone read Kaufman's script for A Scanner Darkly? apparently thats not the script Linklater is using for the movie. Man am I looking forward to this film, no one has made a good Philip K Dick film since Blade Runner and I think Linklater and his rotoscoping style will be the guy to do it.

So, after watching the movie, you're agreeing with McKee's advice. Maybe this film isn't for you. "Clever editing" huh? Harvey, if you don't like the story, the whole concept, then just say so and go watch something else. Why do you think it's a good film if you hate the end? I'm about to read the book, then I'll read Kaufman's script. As for Linklater... I know he's a PKD fan, but his books are tricky to adapt, so I'll wait until I've read the book, Kaufman's script, and seen a trailer before I start looking forward to it.

Lots of people agree Adaptation had a weak third act. Which was also kind of the point. this is what i assumed when i saw it...that were just disrupting any idea of 'reality' or coherance i love the end of this movie...the turtles

i get that. but a weak act is a weak act, not matter how many justifications you have for it.
like ive said so many times, it not that i hate this film. its obvious that i dont, because i spent money to buy the dvd and i have watched it 3 times now. i wouldnt bother doing any of this for a movie i dont like.
i dont HATE the ending....got that? its that i think the beginning is the better part of the film. typically a movie should build to a climax, for me the climax of this movie is in the middle.

i get that. but a weak act is a weak act, not matter how many justifications you have for it. It's a strong act, and it makes the film because it gives the whole thing its meaning. This ending works for this film. It sorta reminded me of the ending to The Player. Not all films have to build the same way, that's McKee talking *slap*. I mean, look at how cool Full Metal Jacket is: the first half is killer, but the last half puts it all in perspective and makes the film. Think outside the 16x9 square, man.

If those sequences were in any other Vietnam War film everyone would love them. Bullshit. The only movie ever made with cool Veitnam War scenes was Universal Soldier. And that's another good example of a movie running way too long.

I liked the last half of Full Metal Jacket. If anything I think it's the stronger half. Yes but how many stars do you give it?
