LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Judd Apatow, creator of "Freaks and Geeks," said "Felicity" co-creator Matt Reeves was one of the reasons he dropped out of college before graduating. The statements were made when Apatow was promoting his new FOX comedy "Undeclared" at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour.
Asked about his own college experience, Apatow said he attended USC in Los Angeles for two years before running out of money and interest. Upon further prodding, Apatow revealed that it was Reeves' talent that helped push him out the door.
"I went to college at USC with Matt Reeves, who created 'Felicity' and the only thing I remember about Matt from that time was how much more talented he was than I was," said Apatow. "He was, at the time, working for Steven Spielberg. Spielberg gave him all of his old 8 mm films that he shot when he was two years old or whatever. And he was having Matt cut them into something, and I couldn't figure out how to get the film in the camera."
"Actually, part of the reason I dropped out of college was my films were so terrible in this one class and Matt Reeves' films were so amazing that I really felt like I was making a horrible mistake."
A little later, Apatow revealed what may have been the more pressing impetus to leave -- a free trip won from an appearance on "The Dating Game."
"I had won 'The Dating Game' and had wanted to go on the trip to Acapulco. It was either I take my final or go on the trip."
However, Apatow doesn't seem to regret his decision, and it certainly hasn't stopped him from achieving success.
"My college experience was so lame, I wish something happened. I mean it was … it was terrible," he said. "I showed up excited. I hit on a girl for three months. She wouldn't fool around with me, and then it was over."
Apatow tried hard to recall one good college experience. It had nothing to do with academics.
"One night I got stoned with Graham Chapman. That was about the most exciting thing that ever happened to me."
Apatow dismissed the idea that "Undeclared" is a college-version of "Freaks and Geeks."
"It's more like if one of the 'geeks' went to college and was surrounded by more normal people -- how he would try and fit in and change his social status."
"Undeclared," which stars Canadian actor Jay Baruchel, British actor Charlie Hunnan (the original "Queer As Folk" ), "Freaks" regular Seth Rogen (who also writes for the series), Monica Keena ("Dawson's Creek") and singer Louden Wainwright III, is slated to debut in midseason. In addition, Apatow told Zap2it that another "Freaks" regular, Jason Segel, who played Nick, will make an appearance in the show's third episode.
