Everything you wanted or didn't want to know about actor Jason Segel. Just a little bit tongue in cheek by the way
There is much mystery surrounding the birth date of Jason Jordan Segel. According to IMDB.com, Jason was born on the 18th of January, 1980 in Los Angeles, California. While The Jason Segel Website lists his birth year as 1979. Nevertheless Jason was born during the best month of the year, he is additionally a Capricorn also known as the best star sign.
Jason’s acting career began with a slow start. He was allegedly first seen on screen in the 1998 film ‘Can’t Hardly Wait’ directed and written by Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont, where he played the memorable role of the ‘Watermelon guy’. Sadly though in his one scene he was outshone by the ‘Stoner Guy’.
Jason could next be seen as Kyle in another quality film starring the irrepressible Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Tom Everett Scott, ‘Dead Man on Campus’ (1998). This is where he first met future girlfriend Linda Cardellini, who played Kelly. Here they play boyfriend and girlfriend and share what appears to be their first kiss. Cardellini describes what happened-
“Well we actually met a few years ago on the set of Dead Man On Campus and on our first day together we had to kiss but then we didn’t see each other again the whole time. And then I saw him again in the auditions for Freaks And Geeks and we got along but we were just friends. But when the show finished we realised how close we had become and we were both single and we kinda looked at each other and yeah…”
1999 was a big year for Jason. He makes appearances in 'SLC Punk', 'New Jersey Turnpikes' and 'Freaks and Geeks'. SLC Punk covers the all-day routine of two young punks living in Salt Lake City, Jason plays a character named Mike. In New Jersey Turnpikes Jason has a small role. He describes the film as a ‘A mock documentary about basketball in the seventies’. Jason Segel’s most memorable role though is his portrayal of the young stoner, Nick Andopolis in the cult favourite NBC’s Freaks and Geeks.
Jason discusses the similarities between himself and the character of Nick, ‘We're both pretty ambitious. But I think his ambitions are sort of unrealistic, and he has his head in the clouds. But he's as nice a guy as could be’. When asked to asses whether he was a freak or a geek in high school Jason states, ‘I was sort of neither. I was on the basketball team for a couple of years, and I went from that to trying to work. I went from being around the athletic crowd to doing my own thing pretty quickly. I sort of knew everybody, I guess’. Jason’s favourite Freaks and Geeks episode is ‘I’m with the Band’, he states ‘My favourite so far is the band episode, 'cause I had so much to do on it. I had to learn how to play drums on it. It was really fun to do’.
His next role was Eric in the Fox television show 'Undeclared' where he was reunited with Freaks and Geeks producer Judd Apatow, co-star Seth Rogen and much of the Freaks and Geeks crew. Again playing a loveable but slightly psychotic loser, Eric spends his time onscreen learning to let go of his suffocating relationship with long-time girlfriend Lizzie who has left for University.
Jason returns to the big screen after his television stint co-starring as Sam in 'Slackers' (2002) which also stars Devon Sawa and 'Rushmore’s' Jason Schwartzman. Here he plays one of three college students working to scam the system. Next he appears as Leon in ‘11:14’ (2003), a twisted story about ‘chance’ starring Oscar winner Hilary Swank, Colin Hanks and Rachael Leigh Cook. Before finally appearing as Leo in the short film ‘Certainly Not a Fairytale’ (2003), again co-starring with girlfriend and Freaks and Geeks star Linda Cardellini.
What’s next for Jason? Well he is soon to be seen playing ‘himself’ in the mock-umentary ‘Lollilove’ (2004) and Smelly Bob in ‘The Good Humour Man’ (2004), working again with ‘New Jersey Turnpikes’ star Kelsey Grammer.
Jason is a fan of actors Edward Norton, Robert DeNiro and James Dean, whom his Freaks and Geeks co-star James Franco later went on to portray in a Dean biopic (2001). His favourite author is J.D. Salinger, though that's what everyone says. Jason is a middle child, he had two other siblings one being a younger sister. His hobbies include piano ‘I like to play piano a little bit’ and basketball, he was a member of his high school basketball team which won the California State Championship. Jason’s biggest pet peeve is a hot room, ‘I hate it when the room you are in is too hot. I like it temperate’ and he likes to sleep in his spare time ‘I try to sleep as much as possible’.
